New Zealand
South Island 2019

Arrival

Christchurch

We travelled to Christchurch from Melbourne. The initial view of the South Island was in stark contrast to our previous trip in Northern NSW, just two weeks earlier, around Tamworth & Armidale which was in stage 5 drought with many town water supplies consisting of puddles in their water reservoirs. Our flight over the coast saw snow-capped mountains (see page header) as far as the eye could see with numerous lakes and rivers. Water was in abundance. Australia really is a dry continent.

Accommodation

Our trip was to last four weeks on the South island staying mostly in DOC campsites and free camping. We hired a three berth motorhome which was both good and bad: The motorhome performed admirably but we were stir crazy by week four. New Zealand is very RV Friendly and there were ample camp sites. Caravan Parks were clean and well looked after but tended to be tired and a bit over-priced. Staff at parks were, without exception, very helpful and friendly.
How different is New Zealand landscape from ours!!!. Misty moist, lots of dark pine clipped hedges round fields, Pampas grass hedges round paddocks and grazing sheep in very green fields. Looked idyllic. Part of the drive included Scenic Drive 7 from Burke’s Pass to Mt Cook.
