At the time of this trip we had not been to the Flinders Ranges since 1970. At that time we went in the September school vacation with some Americans we were working with. The roads were often covered in water and all creeks were overflowing. There was an abundance of wildflowers. We expected there would be changes. On the way we planned to overnight at Ngarkat NP but ended up staying three nights and vowed to return.Quite a few properties in the Flinders have designer 4wd tracks; a guy we met actually assists the owners to plan their track. Access to these tracks ranges in price from $50 per day (as at 2008). The tracks usually have quite good views and the tracks often follow or are the creek beds.If you are planning a trip to the Flinders an overnight at Burra is worthwhile but if you want to stay in the caravan park you need to book ahead. There are ample off-road sites. Plan to allow at least a half day to see the historic sites. At the Flinders there are many camp sites in the gorges. We stayed in the Bunyeroo gorge and made day trips out of there.
