Leigh Creek is a hub for the area, large enough to have a supermarket. The caravan park is run from the service station, where you pay, by the Progress Association. Many travellers, however, just overnight in the layby outside town. We had thought of leaving our camper trailer there while we explored the area over some rough roads but there is no security whatsoever. In the area are the Ochre Pits, a quarry used as a source of different coloured ochres for body painting. Ochre from here was traded extensively. There is also the local coal mine; a daily train takes coal from the mine to be used for a substantial part of South Australia’s electricity generation
