Georgia Bore
Talawanna Tk Back to Georgia Bore
7.45
Departed camp Cold night. Terry worried about his parents, but his four siblings living in Melb seem to
be doing a good job sorting things out.
We saw very sick looking dingo digging for water on the way out of the national park. Russ wld have shot
him out of kindness had he been able. This is not much of a place for dogs as there appears to be very
little game around. Mostly birds and insects.
9.55
We turned out of the NP and headed back to the Aboriginal community at Cotton Creek (Parrngurr).
Good road for the next 20 km; it looks also well graded in the opposite direction to Newman. Would be
OK as escape route as long as your vehicle could cope with the first
60 very rough km up to the Parrngurr turnoff.
10.20
Morning tea. Turned off to Cotton Creek. Terry phoned his brother. Appears May is still doing well. Both
had pneumonia. Russ and Helen elected to drive on to Georgia Bore while the rest of us went into
Cotton Creek for some fuel ($4.20 per litre).
11.05
Arrived at Parrngurr community at Cotton Creek. Semi-tidy Aboriginal community. White manager,
medical clinic, school, store, fuel, some neat houses, but grounds could do with a spruce up. Group of
older women at work with brooms picking up rubbish and sweeping.
Good on them! Diesel fuel was $4.20 litre and spent money on fruit,
milk and cokes at store. The prices seemed reasonable. The people here call themselves the Martu; not
sure where the map gets the Parrngurr from!!!
1.15
Lunch stop on track. About 20 min break.
2.30
Leader David stopped. Noise in one of his wheels. A bearing? John and David stripped the wheel down.
Discovered it was one of the mounts and started the repair with a spare bolt mount.
3.30
There were two sat phones in the convey, David had one and we had the other. As we were unable to
contact Russ & Helen we departed for the Georgia Bore to let them know what was happening, leaving
the others with David.
3.45
Arrived Georgia Bore. Russ & Helen already there and set up. Starting to wonder about the delay of the rest of us.
6.00
The remainder of the party arrived. No fire tonight. We all forgot to collect wood. David spent the evening (7 - 8pm) stripping out the
shock absorber bolt mount that had given way. (rear left). He didn't want to hold up the group the next morning.
Frustrating day. But all turned out well by sleep time!
The Talawana Tk is the worst road we have experienced so far, even worse, we think, than the Heather Hwy.
